Shadows along the Bank

(Hooded Mergansers

Hooded Mergansers are being reported on the rare species list near us in Long Beach. They are dependably seen, however, along the shadowy banks of the Link River, adjacent to the Favell Museum. I’m always amazed at how small they are compared to the other mergansers.

If you are ever in the Klamath Falls area, don’t miss the Favell. In this tiny Oregon town, it houses periodic exhibitions from local artists, beautiful sculptures and paintings that celebrate the history and nature of the Old West. Most important, however, the modest museum contains an extensive collection of the oldest and rarest artifacts from Oregon’s indigenous population—perhaps a native culture that is the oldest in North America.
